Airbnb’s Growth and Summer Travel Updates

As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, Americans prepare to kick off the summer travel season, (and 2020 presidential candidates intensify their travel to early primary states) we are seeing interesting data that speaks to how the Airbnb community of hosts and guests continues to grow and diversify across the country and around the world.

Airbnb’s mission is to create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. To advance our mission, we are focused on reimagining travel by building an end-to-end travel platform that combines where you stay, what you do, and how you get there, all in one place. To achieve this goal, we are investing in creating new businesses that will power our growth over the long-term. As the global travel and tourism industry continues to grow faster than GDP (3.9% in 2018), Airbnb is succeeding because:

  • Our platform is fueled by hosts and guests who are loyal to Airbnb because we treat them like members of a community, not commodities.
  • We have an unrivaled brand.
  • Our community has created a truly global network. Guests who are seeking unique listings and experiences around the world find what they want at Airbnb. That demand generates greater opportunities for even more hosts. Many of the communities where Airbnb is adding listings do not have traditional accommodation options. For example, in Catalonia there are almost 120 communities that do not have a hotel, and we have worked to grow our community of hosts in places like these.
  • Our community offers unique, high-quality accommodations and experiences that have created a new way to travel that did not exist before and cannot be found anywhere else.

Adding More Than 1 Million Listings

Today, we are releasing new data regarding the growth of our global community:

  • Between July 1, 2018 and May 15, 2019, Airbnb added more than 1 million listings, and there are more than 6 million Airbnb listings around the world. For comparison, Marriott added 46,101 new rooms between July 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019*, bringing their total to 1.33 million rooms.
  • Airbnb listings are available in 100,000 cities around the world.
  • Airbnb listings are not concentrated in any one market. Less than 3% of all active listings are in New York City, London, and Paris. Five years ago, over 10% of all active listings were in those three markets. No one city accounts for more than 1% of our listings worldwide.
  • Airbnb offers millions of listings that cannot be booked anywhere else, including unique and memorable places to stay. As of May 15, 2019, there are over 18,000 tiny houses listed on Airbnb, over 4,700 castles, and over 2,600 tree houses.
