The spring break and Easter trend of traveling to warmer climates with a focus on nature continues into summer trip planning on Airbnb. Airbnb travelers are discovering new off-the-grid destinations to immerse themselves in, from the shimmering waters of Yeosu, South Korea to the mountains and caves in Bragg Creek, Canada.

Globally, these are some of the top trending destinations Airbnb guests are heading to this summer based on percentage growth in bookings during the same time last year*:

Right here in Asia Pacific, other trending summer destinations include under-the-radar and traditionally less explored cities. These include Bundaberg, Queensland (230%) and Orange, New South Wales (215%) in Australia; Selangor in Malaysia (267%); and Kanagawa (220%) and Nagasaki (216%) in Japan.


Trending Space Types

This summer, ryokans emerged the top trending space type on Airbnb with 144% growth in bookings year-on-year. From Michelin Guide-listed Tsukiya Ryokan in Kyoto to bookshop-themed modern ryokan Book and Bed Tokyo that offers guests more than 3,400 books, guests are spoilt for choice with a wide range of unique ryokans on the platform.

Bookings for shepherd’s huts have grown 143% year-on-year, as more guests opt for a summer of glamping and digital detoxes in these rustic homes. For some peace and tranquility, explore these two handcrafted cabins in Bundaberg, Queensland and Cook, Canberra in Australian wilderness.

In Taiwan, minsu bookings are up 104% as guests around the world are increasingly drawn to Taiwan’s delicious street food culture, scenic landscapes and famed local hospitality. In Hualien, host Ian’s minsu features a coffee shop on the ground floor, a bar stocked with teas, bookshelves. The ground floor of the shop “From Me” provides hand-drip coffee, artisan desserts, handmade jams, and local handicrafts to showcase the local agricultural features and craftsmanship.


For the Family — Seaside Towns and National Parks

Families are opting for affordable summertime getaways with charming main streets and beach access, with top destinations including the United States, Canada and Turkey. They’re also continuing to crave adventurous excursions to national parks, with Williams, Arizona and Santa Clara, Utah in the United States seeing guest arrivals up 122 percent and 154 percent year-over-year, respectively**.

For You and Yours — Brew and View

Two of the top trending destinations for groups of two on Airbnb this summer are widely known for the libations they produce. Qīngdǎo, China offers winding cobbled streets, historic German architecture, red-capped hillside villas, and the famous hometown brew Tsingtao while the village of Bushmills in Northern Ireland is home to the Old Bushmills Distillery and close to UNESCO World Heritage site, the Giant’s Causeway.

Closer to home, Dapa, Philippines and Douliu, Taiwan are two increasingly popular destinations for couples.

Escapes prime for Solar Eclipse 2019 viewing are proving popular amongst traveler duos too with Salta, Argentina guest arrivals up 281 percent year-over-year*** and the beautiful but rugged island of South Uist located in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland – also one of our 19 for 2019 destinations.

For Singles — Baja and Beaches

The stunning Baja Peninsula of Mexico and accessible beach towns in the US are trending more than 300 percent with solo travelers globally****. Other destinations luring parties of one include the rainforests of Canela, Brazil and lively soccer matches in Dortmund, Germany.
