Market Day in Johannesburg: a step towards supporting small businesses

When the Johannesburg Home Sharing Club launched in June 2018, one of their visions for the future was to establish ways to empower local communities. Less than five months after the club’s inception members have taken strides to achieve this goal by organising a host led Market Day in Johannesburg.

The Market Day brought together the Airbnb hosting community and small businesses in one tent on Melrose Square. The vendors exhibited services and products ranging from cleaning to insurance–all of which enhance the hosting experience.

The day created a space in which the Johannesburg community could come together and share knowledge on how they could support the growth of each other’s businesses. Daniela, a super host in Parktown, Johannesburg shared the impact the day on her business:

“There are so many things at this Market Day that are going to benefit my listing (on Airbnb). For example, the information session from the tax consultant was really useful. I also managed to buy locally made biscuits which I am sure my guests are going to love. I am hoping there will be more Market Days like this one in which hosts can grow their hosting experiences.”

In the upcoming year, through meetups and one-on-ones, the club will create an ecosystem to connect hosts with small businesses that help to improve their listing amenities.
