The world’s most prestigious tennis tournament returns to London next month, and with it comes the chance for local residents to cash in. According to new figures revealed by Airbnb, local residents are set to make over £2 million* this year as the tennis championship serves up a fantastic opportunity for Londoners to open their homes to the swathes of tennis fans flooding to the capital.
Tournament prize money this year is £2.25m for the singles winners, and, taken together, local residents will gain almost as much from listing their space on Airbnb for the two weeks of the tournament. With the average nightly booking value of an Airbnb at £100 in the areas surrounding SW19**, hosts are set to earn extra cash whilst guests can enjoy affordable accommodation and experience Wimbledon, UK through the eyes of a local.
The opportunity comes as a result of the truly international scope of the sport with fans from around the world travelling to London to see their favourite players and national heroes battle it out for tennis’ most coveted prize.
Romanian fans are most enthusiastic for this year’s tournament, with Romanian Airbnb guest arrivals near Wimbledon, UK up 97% as they flock to cheer on Simona Halep, the world number one. Similarly, there has been a 44% increase in Czech guest arrivals, with fans rushing to SW19 to see their two top-10-ranked players, Karolina Pliskova and Petra Kvitova. With Novak Djokovic struggling with a return from injury and ranked 21st in the world, Serbian guest arrivals to listings near the All-England Club are down 30% this year.

Andy Murray’s absence this year has not dampened the spirits of British fans however, as British guest bookings in and around Wimbledon, UK have increased by 29% over last year. This may be in part due to the possible participation of up and coming British tennis star Katie Boulter, who could potentially make the tournament as a Wildcard.
