Women’s Health Editor-in-Chief Liz Plosser Shares Her Wellness Travel Tips

Even with best intentions to incorporate mindfulness and wellness into your vacation, a much-deserved trip for some R&R can often lead to hitting pause on fitness plans and over indulging on local food, drink and fun. To inspire balance, Women’s Health Editor-in-Chief Liz Plosser shares her tips for a guilt-free, relaxing getaway.

1. Find a destination that offers a blend of wellness and fun.

Austin has the perfect mix of outdoor hiking, running, and kayaking options, tons of boutique fitness studios, and a mean margarita and tacos scene to celebrate with après workout. I have been dying to go to Charleston and eat my way through the local fare while soaking up the charm of this southern town!

2. A run outside is a great way to explore the city you just landed in.

My tradition is to go for a quick, easy-paced run as soon as I’ve reached my destination and unpacked. It’s a great way to see the sights and get your bearings, and is the perfect “re-set,” especially if you’re changing travel zones. I just did this on a trip to Barcelona and it was the most lovely way to settle into the city.

For travelers who are looking for something to do in a new place, Airbnb Experiences are one-of-a-kind activities hosted by passionate locals – like Oriol in Barcelona – that connect people to a different and authentic side of a city. Oriol introduces guests to Barcelona and its culture by designing a jog around the city based on where they are staying.

3. Make time for exercise early in the day so you don’t have to make excuses later.

It’s easiest to get a quick sweat out of the way first thing in the morning, before the siren song of rosé with lunch calls your name. But as long as you’re on your feet exploring, you’re getting in lots of great activity and that definitely counts!

From sports to nature, Airbnb Experiences offer activities across several health and wellness categories to help travelers pursue fitness while they are on the road. Tony hosts several early morning surfing sessions in Costa Rica, getting guests both active and centered before they start their day.

4. Homes equipped with essential amenities can help you stick to [some of] your regular routine.

Having your own kitchen where you can keep healthy breakfast options and brew your own (full!) pot of coffee every morning is such a game changer. It really kicks off your morning on the right note, so you’ve got healthy momentum heading into your day.

Find the perfect home for your next trip with Airbnb Plus, a selection of homes verified for quality and comfort. Every Plus home is one-of-a-kind, thoughtfully designed, and equipped with a standard set of amenities you need to live like you do at home. Scroll through the below Plus homes in Sydney, Cape Town, Milan, Barcelona, and Los Angeles.

5. Try a bodyweight exercise that you can do in any space before heading out for the day.

Liz recommends the Push-Up and Inverted Shoulder Press. For this exercise, place hands slightly more than shoulder-width apart on the floor and extend feet so your body forms a straight line from head to heels. Bend elbows to do a push-up, lowering until your chest nearly touches the floor; then push through your hands to straighten arms while raising hips and pressing into heels. From that position, bend your elbows to lower head until it almost touches floor. Press through hands to straighten arms; then return to start. That’s 1 rep.

You can adjust this move to suit your fitness level. Too hard? Ditch the push-up and inverted press every other rep. Need more of a challenge? Place your feet on a step or chair and perform the exercise as instructed.
